Is Making a Photography Gallery Home Page an easy thing?

I can’t remember when my first website here at thorsen.info went live for the first time, but it must have been in the 00s. I had wanted to have a website for several years, and my son Carsten, who works with IT on a daily basis, had promised to make it for me. You should not rush people who are busy in their everyday lives and who want to do you a favor.

After a couple of years, I got an exciting Christmas present from Carsten. It was a book about how to make a website on Front Page. It was really sweet of him. I said thank you very much and said that I would figure it out and doing it myself. Carsten was a little embarrassed, but you don’t need to be, when you’re married, have two lovely girls and a job that also takes up a lot of time. Throughout the whole process, he has been incredibly helpful and supported with both advice and work.

After a few years, Carsten thought that my site should be made in Joomla, because it was more mobile-friendly. So, we did – still with me as the worker and Carsten as technical assistance.

Then WordPress was in, and I was persuaded to change again. We have been happy with that for a number of years, but around December 1, 2024, when the website had not been changed for a while, it turned out that it had been hacked. The site was full of blog articles about gambling and a lot of other things about the same thing. And that is absolutely incredible, because I don’t gamble at all myself. We didn’t have much security on the site. You don’t have that, because you won’t get hit yourself. It is of course stupid to believe, but that’s how people are many times. At the same time, our web hotel was not able to deliver a backup that could be used, and I had not been too diligent about doing that myself. The web hotel was obliged to take a weekly backup. That is part of what you pay for.

So, Carsten and I had to start over again, we had all the photos, and some pages could be reused. We have changed web hotel, the page theme and created many new pages. We have put a lot of effort into security, and we are trying our best to SEO-optimize the site – Search Engine Optimizing.

So welcome to my almost new site. You shall be most welcome again and so are your friends and acquaintances.

To have success, you never finish working. You need visitors and they don’t come by themselves – the promotion begins. First of all you have to post images to social media. Some photography groups accept links and others don’t. It is also a good idea to tell your homepage adress to everybody you can get to listen to you.

I am a lucky man. I love my “children” very much  and my son, who works with IT on a daily basis, has helped helps me with this site. I do most of the work, but he is the expert and gives me advise and corrects my errors.

Less is often more. Instead of displaying every single photo you’ve taken, select your best works. Curate your collection carefully. Make sure each image reflects your style and skills. A smaller, high-quality selection is far more impactful than a large array of mediocre images.

Presentation matters. How you frame your photos can enhance their appeal. Choose frames that fit the theme of your gallery. You might opt for sleek modern frames for contemporary works or rustic frames for vintage-style photography. If it’s an online gallery, consider the layout carefully. A clean, simple design ensures that your photos remain the focal point.

After completing your gallery, it’s time to share it. Use social media platforms to promote your photos. Engage with your audience through posts and stories. If it’s a physical gallery, connect with local media or photography groups to spread the word.
