With a grandchild we visited Copenhagen in 2019. She chose to visit Folketinget – the Danish parliament, some museums, Kronborg Castle and of course Strøget – the famous pedestrian street.

Whether you’re an aspiring photographer or a seasoned pro, the city boasts countless locations that promise memorable shots. Here are some of the best spots to capture the essence of Copenhagen through your lens.

1. Nyhavn

No photography journey in Copenhagen is complete without a visit to Nyhavn. This iconic waterfront district is famous for its 17th-century buildings, colorful facades, and historic wooden ships. Early mornings or late afternoons provide the perfect golden hour light, casting a beautiful glow on the water. Don’t forget to capture the reflections of the colorful houses in the canal – it’s a sight that will surely elevate your portfolio.

2. The Little Mermaid

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, the Little Mermaid statue is one of Copenhagen’s most photographed landmarks. Located at Langelinie Pier, the statue presents an excellent opportunity for capturing close-up shots as well as wider perspectives of the harbor. A hint for photographers: visiting during sunrise can help you avoid crowds and capture the statue in tranquil morning light.

3. Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, isn’t just about the rides—it’s a visual delight as well. The lush gardens, beautiful flower beds, and whimsical architecture offer a plethora of photogenic opportunities. Whether you’re capturing the park’s playful atmosphere or the exquisite lighting at night, Tivoli provides a uniquely enchanting backdrop that ranges from vibrant to serene.

4. Christianshavn

Christianshavn, known for its quaint canals and colorful buildings, offers a different vibe compared to the rest of the city. The area is home to Copenhagen’s version of Amsterdam’s canals, and is perfect for dreamy, romantic shots. Head to the Church of Our Saviour with its iconic spiral tower for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. The area is especially picturesque during sunset when the warm light reflects off the water.

5. The Round Tower

The Round Tower, one of Copenhagen’s most famous landmarks, offers a unique photographic opportunity with its spiraling walkway and stunning views from the top. Climb to the top for sweeping vistas of the city skyline, and don’t shy away from capturing the interior’s unique architecture. The surrounding area is also vibrant, with charming streets that are perfect for street photography.

As the home of the Danish royal family, Amalienborg Palace presents an opportunity to capture regal architecture and impressive ceremonies. The four identical palace buildings surrounding an octagonal courtyard offer a striking composition for photographers. Pay attention to the changing of the guard, which occurs daily and makes for an exciting and dynamic subject.
