What Makes the Vintage Moped Meet-Up Special?

FOLE VETERAN MOPED MEETING 2019 AND 2022

On a Saturday end June there is a meeting i a tiny village called Fole. People from all over Denmark gather here with their mopeds; compete, talk, drink a beer or two and have a splendid day. I love to go there because of the millions of motives and the allover friendly moped people.

The Fole Veteran Moped Meet-up explained

For several years, my friend Christian and I have been attending a veteran moped meet-up in Fole – the link is their Facebook page, unfortunately only in Danish. Fole is a small village of just over 200 inhabitants located in Southern Jutland. There is a veteran moped club here, that has been holding a moped meet-up for enthusiasts from all over Denmark for several years now. The meet-up has slowly grown bigger and bigger. In 2024, there were over 1,600 participating mopeds, and people have started to brag about / joke about it, that it may be the world’s largest.

The meet-up takes place in a field on the outskirts of the village and is free for participants. When Christian and I drove there, we overtook a number of mopeds on the way. From mid-morning, participants start to flock in. Some come alone and others as clubs. They are given a participant number and a piece of wood to use for the support leg. One of the purposes of the meet-up is socializing, and it starts right away. You immediately meet someone you know, and the hugs are loosely in your cartridge belt. Immediately after arrival, it is also necessary to wash the road dust in your dry throat away with a cold beer. And then the party starts.

When you are at a moped meeting, it is not only important to greet acquaintances, you also have to walk around the place and see if there are any new beautiful examples of vintage mopeds. It might be that you come across someone who has a technical problem with their moped, and then you can help with good advice or help with a wrench. A little oil on your fingers can be quite healthy.

In Denmark, many people use a moped as a mean of transportation. It is cheap to buy and cheap to use. Within vintage mopeds, there are many brands such as Kreidler, SCO, Yamaha, Honda, Velo Solex and Puch. The last one is probably the most popular, and for many Puch Maxi owners it is a must to have an Arla box on the luggage rack. The many mopeds are also in very different conditions. Some are shined up to the brim, fully renovated and freshly painted, others are kept in a condition that suits their age. But all are treated with love-

Arla is Denmark’s largest dairy company, and they use the boxes to transport milk. If you, as a Puch Maxi owner, have one of these on the back, you are well equipped. I have also seen various wooden boxes on the luggage rack. It can be one for shoe polish or for apples.

It is also apparently popular to drink an Underberg, which is a German spiced brandy that is available in small bottles. Many have a small holder mounted on the moped, so it is not necessary to reach far out if you are in a deficit of vitamins. It is also popular to have the small bottles sitting in a cartridge belt over one shoulder, but then it is apparently a decidedly larger vitamin deficit you suffer from. The Underberg holder has also been seen in a slightly larger version, so that it can hold a can of beer.

Some vintage mopeds are also equipped with very high handlebars. It is said to look very stylish and sharp. But after a day’s driving you return home with multiple myosis in the upper arms and backs.
