LONDON 2025
In September we had the pleasure of going to London on a 9 day trip. The weather was with us, except for one day of light rain. The last 4 days the underground staff went on strike, so traffic in the city was a total mess. But otherwise it was a wonderful trip with plenty of time for photography.
London - the perfect city for street photography
We visited some museums during our stay – Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum and Natural History Museum – all excellent museums in their own fields. We lived in South Kensington, where all three are located, so it was just around the corner.
I overcame my fear of heights and we went on the London Eye – a fantastic view of the whole city, and it wasn’t as bad as I had imagined with the heights. You only get around once, but the speed is slow, and you have plenty of time to enjoy the view and take photos.
A great experience – also seen from a photographic perspective – was the market in Notting Hill on Saturday. The many colorful buildings and the vibrant life of people. It took about 3 hours before we could detach ourselves. Due to widespread osteoarthritis, my wife needs to sit down for a bit in between, and there were also many opportunities for that.
On Sunday we visited St. Paul’s Cathedral. We weren’t allowed to walk around because there was a service going on, and we also learned that it costs about 30 pounds to enter. We have never experienced this before. We have never paid money to enter a church. The house of God should be free and not a money machine.
The last 4 days the underground trains were not running. The staff were on strike for more pay, and as a result, the traffic in the City was chaotic. In the City it took about an hour to travel 1 mile by bus. This limited our activities and we did not achieve as much as we had imagined.
For me, it’s not important to be able to tick off as many attractions as possible. It’s much more important to get around the city and soak up the atmosphere in the different neighborhoods. Exciting areas were Leadenhall Market and Chinatown. All in all, London is a fantastic city to shoot street photography in. It is not only English people with stiff caps and suits, but the streets are teeming with people of all nationalities and races, and I did not experience anyone protesting about being photographed, and I only use focal lengths from wide angle to slightly telephoto.
