What Are the Most Striking Aspects of Indian Life?

MUMBAI AND JAIPUR 2007

Our first visit to India went to Mumbai. When you arrive from the wealrhy Denmark, it is a striking experience to see all that poverty for the first time. It may sound strange, but at the same time, it’s impressing to see the indians live their lives. Mumbai is characterized by myriads of people. Jaipur is quieter and a more beautiful place.

The Most Striking Aspects of Indian Life

I can’t remember the real reason why we chose to go on holiday in India in February 2007. But since I’ve always loved doing street photography, this must have been the case. It’s also fantastic to experience the world’s second most populous country. And it’s a young country. The British colonialists only left the country in 1947. Not everything they’ve done has benefited the country, perhaps quite the opposite. But something that unites the country with 800 different languages is the English language, which all schoolchildren learn from the beginning. When someone from the north has to have a conversation with someone from the south, they at least have English to speak, unless they both speak Hindi.

India, a land of stark contrasts and vibrant experiences, offers a kaleidoscope of culture, tradition, and modern marvels. From the bustling streets of Mumbai to the enchanting palaces of Jaipur, the essence of Indian life can be felt in myriad ways. This article explores some of the most striking aspects of Indian life—perfect for those who appreciate the nuances of culture and photography.

Mumbai, often referred to as the financial capital of India, is a city that never sleeps. The sheer energy of vibrant street life, lush art scenes, and cinematic landscapes envelopes visitors and residents alike. A quintessential Mumbai experience involves capturing the lively essence of its streets—where every corner tells a story. An impressive place to visit is the outdoor laundry Dhobi Ghats where washermen – Dhobis wash clothes for companies and institutions. It is bustling with people in high activity.

One striking aspect of Mumbai life is the diversity it harbors. Here, people from every corner of the country come together, contributing to a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions. As you stroll through suburban neighborhoods or bustling markets like Colaba and Bandra, photographers will find endless opportunities to capture the essence of this multicultural city – the colorful street art and emotional candid portraits. Moreover, Mumbai’s iconic landmarks, such as the Gateway of India and the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, provide incredible backdrops for photographers. The architectural marvels reflect a blend of colonial elegance and modern design, showcasing India’s historical narrative while also embracing contemporary lifestyle.

After exploring Mumbai’s rapid energy, a journey to Jaipur offers a distinct change of pace. Known as the Pink City, Jaipur is steeped in royal heritage and captivating architecture. The majestic forts and palaces, such as the Amer Fort and City Palace, provide breathtaking visuals for a photographer.

During a drive in Jaipur, our tuk-tuk driver asked us to visit a place where clothes were sewn. We asked why, and he replied that he was getting a T-shirt for his son. It might not have been in our plans, but we granted his wish. It turned out to be a former Australian ballet dancer who ran the place, and she was proud of that. As she said, the children were given something to eat and some schooling. Children started working sewing appliqués on fabric when they were 7-8 years old, and when they turned 14 they were fired, because then they didn’t have as much mobility and agility in their fingers anymore. We ended up not buying anything.

The local bazaars, such as Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar, offer an atmosphere filled with colorful textiles, traditional jewelry, and handicrafts that scream for attention. Here, one can capture the essence of local life—vendors proudly displaying their crafts, women in colorful saris negotiating prices, and the hustle and bustle of daily commerce.
