Royal Run: A Path to Better Health
Royal Run (only in Danish)is an annual fitness race in several cities in Denmark on the same day. It was started in 2018 by the then Crown Prince Frederik – now H.M. King Frederik X – in connection with his 50th birthday. The goal is to improve the health of the Danes through running. The King has always been very physically active, and his brilliant idea has resonated with the Danes. In January 2025, the race has long since sold out in all cities.
The race has been held every year in five different places around Denmark. Copenhagen has always been a fixed location; the other race cities have changed. 3 different distances are run in each place – 1 mile, 5 km and 10 km. You can run or walk the chosen distance, and the participants are not timed.
The royal family participates in all the races. The King himself usually in 3 cities – always Copenhagen, and the Queen and their children distributed in the rest. In Copenhagen, the finish line is at Amalienborg Palace Square.
The pictures in the gallery above are from 2023 in Aabenraa – a town close to where I live. Here I stood in the town square in the center with my daughter, my grandson and my great-grandson and photographed the participants as they passed me sweating. It was a fantastic sight to watch. All participants receive a t-shirt in advance, and most of them were wearing it. However, a few were dressed more imaginatively – royally so to speak. A young woman wearing a long dress worthy of a royal ball passed by, smiling, among other things. Otherwise, I concentrated on the suffering faces of the many runners. In Aabenraa, the then Crown Prince Frederik participated in the 1-mile race.
