Best Tips for Rømø Motor Festival photographers / visitors
As I have already written, Rømø is connected to the mainland via a dam, which makes it easy to get there. But for an event like the Rømø Motor Festival – RMF, there is a lot of traffic pressure on the dam. In order not to sit in line for several hours, it is important that you arrive the day before or before 07:30 in the morning on race day. My photo friend Christian and I have tried to stand in line for 2 hours, just to get away from the beach when the festival ends in the afternoon. I would estimate the number of visitors at around 50,000 and that puts a lot of pressure on the traffic situation.
Of course, make sure to be dressed in a typical way, including a hat. The sun can be harsh on your face on a summer day at the beach. You can buy both food and drinks on the beach. The food is probably what you would most describe as fast food. We have always brought our own food and plenty of water. All right, maybe a few beers for the fun of it.
Now we’ve gone through all the introductions, and now it’s time to take pictures. The times I’ve been accredited, I’ve been most interested in the theme person with his machine. It’s not so much taking pictures of vehicles at speed. The drivers and their clothing create a fantastic symbiosis with their vehicles. Everyone is happy and willing to be photographed, but I also love candid – street / beach photography. And here the subjects are queuing up to be shot.
Several times I’ve experienced someone contacting me and saying, for example: “Don’t you think that’s a nice carburetor sitting on that machine”? I answer kindly back that I think so, and at the same time point to my camera and pointing out that I’m not there because of carburetors but because of photography. I love geeks, no matter what they’re geeking about.
Among the spectators, there are of course also many subjects. It could be a German biker club that has come for the old motorcycles; a couple of people sitting on the roof of an old car to better follow the show; a young beautiful woman with beautiful tattoos walking her dog; or a ten-year-old girl proudly showing off her new toy an electric motorbike.
Once home, the pictures need to be edited and if I choose to reproduce the picture in color, I try to give it a slightly bluish / greenish color temperature like it had in the old days or as time has developed it. But otherwise, I prefer to make it sepia-toned, which also corresponds well to the time.
